David McConville Specialist Orthodontist Sponsors “Teacher of the Year awards” 2012

Launch of national awards programme to celebrate teachers across Ireland sponsored by David McConville Specialist Orthodontics

“Give Your Teacher Top Marks”

Teacher and GAA footballer Rory Kavanagh this week launched a national awards programme honouring primary and secondary school teachers across Ireland, and in doing so invited parents, students and friends to nominate teachers they feel deserve the accolade.

Teacher of the Year Awards 2012 is being spearheaded by www.abcbooks.ie and is sponsored by David McConville Specialist dentistry

and will showcase the shining lights that are, our primary and secondary school teachers right across the country.

Speaking at the launch, Rory Kavanagh said ’This awards programme is a great way to publicly acknowledge and honour our hard-working teachers. As teacher myself I understand the dedication and depth of connection that teachers have with their students’.

The programme allows students, colleagues, family members or friends to nominate teaching heroes based on commitment to teaching standards, creativity, innovation, extra curricular activities and rapport with students.

Speaking about his own role as a teacher, Kavanagh said ‘Teaching is such a rewarding profession. What inspires me most is watching my students progress. If I can say that I have made a small difference to them in a positive way, then I feel very rewarded. I would encourage everyone to think about a teacher that they know and if they believe they are deserving of this award they should nominate them.”

Programme organiser Mark Bundschu of abcbooks.ie says, “We deal with teachers daily and have great respect for the job they do. When we realised there wasn’t a national awards programme to honour the great work of our primary and secondary school teachers we decided to take on the mantle. We will ensure the great work of teachers the length and breadth of the country will be publicly documented and congratulated.”

Each person who votes will receive a 10% discount on orthodontic treatment from sponsors of the programme David McConville Orthodontists. Based in Donegal and Sligo, David McConville specialises in all brace treatments (fixed and invisible).  “We’re delighted to be partners in this programme. As parents we entrust our children in the care of teachers each and every day and very often we privately thank them for that, but we rarely do so publicly. Therefore, we believed this awards programme will give parents, family members and students a unique opportunity to say a public ‘Thank You’.”

Nominations are now open for the title of Teacher of the Year and will close on 15th June 2012. Entries will be judged based on submissions of 500 words or less on why the nominated teacher should receive the accolade Teacher of the Year 2012, as well as any primary evidence including videos, photos, anecdotes or stories.

As a guide, entries are asked to consider the teacher’s excellence in the following areas:
ability to teach and explain a difficult topic, commitment, creativity, innovation, rapport with students and involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Nominations can be completed on www.abcbooks.ie or you can find out more details on the ABC Books facebook page.

Fun Facts about fixed braces

1:Hot drinks make your braces tight

Patients have said that if  braces are ever feeling uncomfortably tight, to have a glass of ice water and the pressure will be relieved. On the other hand, hot drinks actually cause the wire to tighten up a little.

2. They don’t set off metal detectors.

Okay, this is silly but so may people are worried about this! The materials used in making braces are a lightweight, non-magnetic alloy, so though you have to remove shoes, belt, and coat, security don’t give braces a second glance and don’t set off any bells or beeps. On that same note, you are not likely to get hit by lightning wearing braces (hooray!), and won’t pick up radio stations in your mouth :) !

3. You’ll get gaps in your teeth.

The most surprising thing about braces is how much change happens in your bite, sometimes seemingly overnight. Everything will look pretty straight and even in there, and then one day you can look in the mirror and there’s a gap between two of your teeth! Then a week later, the gap is gone again. These gaps are necessary – they create space for teeth to move into place and also help bite widen enough spaceto allow for even better alignment. So if you notice gaps, not to worry – they close up just as quickly and mysteriously as they appear.

4. Braces cannot become “locked” together when two people wearing them kiss.

Today’s brackets are so small and compact that you’d have to try really hard to get them stuck together. That’s not to say somebody might not be able to make it happen if they had enough time on their hands, though…

So with these myths out of the way.. its probably making the thought of having treatment a little less daunting!

We treat our orthodontic patients with Virtually invisible, Damon Clear braces they have clear advantages over traditional braces and aligners. Damon Clear is part of the innovative Damon System, which combines tieless braces with high technology archwires that are clinically proven to move teeth fast and comfortably with truly spectacular smile and facial results.

Damon Clear combines the best of traditional clear braces and invisible aligners to deliver a discrete treatment experience with results that go beyond straight teeth.

With Damon Clear, people may not even realize you’re wearing braces. Other clear or so-called invisible braces have visible metal parts or elastic ties that can yellow during treatment. But tieless Damon Clear braces are more discrete and resistant to staining and discoloration all throughout treatment.

Fast Treatment

See results faster than you might think. While treatment time can vary, clinical studies demonstrate that Damon System treatment is up to six months faster than traditional braces.

Damon Clear works 24 hours a day, seven days a week to perfectly align ALL teeth for a phenomenal smile that enhances your entire facial appearance.

Extraordinary Results

With Damon Clear, you get more than straight teeth. Dr McConville will take into account your unique facial proportions when aligning your teeth, bite and smile. In no time at all you’ll have the smile and facial profile and aesthetics you’ve always dreamed about.

Greater Comfort without Tightening

Clinical studies show that the Damon System provides more comfortable orthodontic treatment than traditional braces.

Damon Clear uses tieless braces that don’t need to be “tightened” and are gentle to the teeth and tissues. Other styles of braces use elastics or active clips that bind archwires in place, which can slow down treatment and cause pain.

A Great Smile for a Lifetime

Deciding what type of treatment you want can be a difficult decision. Traditional braces, invisible aligners or Damon Clear? When making your decision, be sure to look at the big picture. Don’t focus solely on what you will experience during your time in treatment. Focus on what you will look like for the rest of your life. With Damon Clear, you’ll benefit from fast, comfortable braces that are virtually invisible during treatment. And after treatment, you’ll have a spectacular smile that goes beyond just straight teeth.

No Speech Impediments

With Damon Clear, you don’t have to worry about any speech problems.

Few Office Visits

Damon System treatment requires fewer office visits than traditional braces. On average, patients treated with the Damon System require seven fewer office appointments than patients who undergo traditional orthodontic treatment. That means more convenience for you regardless of your level of busy activity or lifestyle.

How Does Orthodontic Treatment Work?

Many different types of appliances, both fixed and removable, are used to help move teeth, retrain muscles and affect the growth of the jaws.  These appliances work by placing gentle pressure on the teeth and jaws.  The severity of your problem will determine which orthodontic approach is likely to be the most effective for you; a comprehensive assessment is required to determine your treatment need, cost etc.

Dr McConville treats both children and adults at the practice. Some patients may be concerned about crooked teeth or improving their smile but feel they would not like to wear conventional “braces” or “train tracks”. We specialise in the very latest “invisible” brace systems for all ages: the result is a stunning smile without anybody noticing you had treatment at all.

Dr McConville opened the specialist orthodontic clinic in Sligo 5 years ago and 2 years ago opened a clinic in Donegal Town.  The clinic has installed the latest in computer technology including digital imaging, photography, and electronic patient records.  We are now one of the few practices in Ireland to have a CT scanner.  The highly accurate imaging and measurement provided by a CT scan allows a greater level of precision when planning treatment and therefore ensures that patients are offered the most effective care possible.

We recognize that every patient is an individual having different expectations and requirements.

Our aim is to provide a personalised treatment plan in a tranquil, non dental environment.

With an ambience of calm and professionalism we aspire to make your visit an enjoyable one..

New Year.. a new smile.. A new you?

Are you now looking at photos from christmas wishing you had not smiled? Then start the new year by taking the first step towards an amazing new smile!!

Teeth are one of the first things others notice about you when they meet and talk to you. All you have to do is flash a smile and people will be judging you on how nice your teeth look. So you want to keep your teeth healthy and, at the same time, beautiful.

David McConville provides specialist Orthodontic treatment to patients of all ages in his clinics in Donegal and Sligo.

What are The benefits of orthodontics?

An attractive smile is a pleasant “side effect” of orthodontic treatment.  It contributes to self-esteem, self-confidence and self-image—important qualities at every age.

Straight teeth help an individual to effectively bite, chew and speak. Straight teeth contribute to healthy teeth and gums.  Teeth that work better also tend to look better.   A pleasing appearance is a vital component of self-confidence.  A person’s self-esteem often improves as orthodontic treatment brings teeth, lips and face into proportion.  In this way, orthodontic treatment can benefit social and career success, as well as improve a person’s general attitude toward life.

It has been clinically proven that a beautiful smile leads to higher self-esteem.  People with beautiful smiles have a lot to be happy about.

Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school, go on to study Orthodontics for an additional three years. Dr McConville had specialist training at Trinity College Dublin and is a member of the Orthodontic Society of Ireland.  Selecting an orthodontist who is a member of the Orthodontic Society of Ireland is your assurance that you have chosen an orthodontic specialist.  By learning about tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics), orthodontists are the uniquely trained experts in dentistry to straighten teeth and align jaws.

How do you know if you need treatment?

Below are some early warning signs indicating it is time for an orthodontic exam:

Early or late loss of baby teeth

Mouth breathing

Finger sucking or other oral habits

52% of woman avoid the camera as they ‘hate their smile’

Ladies may smile for the camera, but it will turn to a frown the moment you show her the picture you’ve taken.
A new study has found that 52% of women are so critical of their appearance that they ‘hate’ looking at photographs of themselves,

Hidden Smile

Three-quarters are self-conscious enough to try to avoid appearing in snaps altogether.

When they do brave the camera lens, ladies most common complaints is that they don’t like their smile.

A third worry that their teeth aren’t white enough and a quarter worry that they’re crooked!

A total of 14 per cent moan about the ‘smile lines’ on their faces.

And even on what is supposed to be the happiest day of their lives, 36 per cent of brides feel anxious about being the focus of so much photographic attention.

But despite the fairer sex’s insecurities, men said the first thing that attracted them to a woman was her smile, according to the survey by Macleans toothpaste.

Celebrity photographer Daniel Kennedy, who has shot stars including Angelina Jolie and Thandie Newton, advised self-conscious women: ‘Try to enjoy yourself. A natural smile that goes through to the eyes is far more attractive than a fake one.

Dont continue to avoid the camera! come speak to us about your concerns!

Does it hurt to have braces fitted?

People regularly express their concern that ‘it will hurt’ prior to making their decision to have braces fitted.

Having a brace fitted doesn’t hurt, the appointment only takes 20 minutes and is very comfortable and pain free! Your teeth will probably feel tender for a few days after. This short lived discomfort can easily be relieved over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen. If your brace rubs your lips for the first few days, or the inside of your cheeks, we provide you with special wax that can help to ease this.

You should have no problems adapting to speech with a brace. You may have problems saying certain words to start with. Some people find it helps to practise by reading aloud. This will again only last a few days until you adapt, and even then is not noticeable to others.

When you have a brace fitted, you can almost enjoy all of your favourite foods! However there are some foods and drinks you need to avoid. These include:

  • chewing gum and other sticky, chewy foods such as toffees, because they get stuck in your brace and may damage it
  • hard/ chewy sweets, fruit juice and fizzy drinks (including the diet varieties)

If you eat any hard or crunchy foods, such as apples, cut them into small pieces before you eat them.

When you play sports you will need to wear a gum shield for contact sports (we can provide you with this) if you have a fixed brace. You may also have to take your removable brace out if you play a musical instrument such as the flute or trumpet. If you wear a fixed brace, you may find it difficult to play these kinds of instrument at first, but you will soon learn to adapt easily.

So overall there is no need to worry about having your braces fitted! Our patients all say this after the first 20 minutes that they had been ‘dreading all week’!

What cases can Invisalign braces treat?

Many people believe that Invisalign is only effective at treating minor orthodontic issues. But the fact is that the 96% patient satisfaction rate is a result of successfully treating a broad range of cases, from overly crowded teeth and underbites to jaw problems and tooth misalignment

If you take a look at the Actual Results section, you’ll find relevant before-and-after pictures of some real Invisalign patients. You’ll see for yourself the visible improvements – but the more important aspect is that correcting orthodontic issues can potentially have positive benefits for your overall health.

Invisalign are also continually making new advancements in their products and treatment process for even better clinical results. Most recently, the addition of Precision Cuts allows the aligners to now accommodate the use of elastics. As a result, more severe bite issues can be corrected effectively with Invisalign.

Here are some of the common conditions currently treated with Invisalign; if there is a specific issue that you do not see addressed here, please contact us here for more information and to see if Invisalign is right for you.

widely spacedSPACED TEETH

This occurs with abnormal continued growth of the jaw bone. When teeth are missing, this can also be caused by the surrounding teeth shifting due to extra space. Spacing issues between teeth can lead to gum problems (due to lack of protection by the teeth), periodontal pockets and increased risk of periodontal disease.

overly crowded teethOVERLY  CROWDED  TEETH

This occurs when there is simply a lack of room within your jaw for all of your teeth to fit normally. When left untreated, overly crowded teeth can get worse over time. This crowding can lead to plaque accumulation, tooth decay and an increased chance of gum disease.

CROSSBITECROSSBITE

This occurs when the upper and lower jaws are both misaligned. It causes one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth, and can happen on both the front and the sides of the mouth. This can lead to abnormal tooth wear and chipping, and periodontal problems including gum disease and bone loss.

UNDERBITEUNDERBITE

This occurs when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. It’s usually caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. It can also be caused by missing upper teeth. This can prevent the normal function of front teeth or molars, which can lead to tooth wear. It can also cause painful jaw and joint problems.

OVERBITEOVERBITE

What people commonly refer to as an “overbite” is known to dental professionals as “overjet”. It occurs when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. It’s typically caused by genetics, bad oral habits, or overdevelopment of the bone that supports the teeth. This can lead to gum disease and chipped or fractured front teeth.

Whatever your complaint you will have a number of orthodontic treatment options. Come and see us for an assessment, discuss your options and organise a manageable monthly payment plan Contact  us here We will be happy to discuss the best options to correct your orthodontic complaints.

Ensure you love your smile on your wedding day

Braces for your wedding

wedding smiles

You have so much to think about when preparing for your perfect wedding day; the venue, dress, flowers, guest list, menu, etc, etc

You will be the most photographed person on the day, recording memories that cannot be recaptured.
Your wedding photos should show your happiness for a lifetime! You want to be smiling!

Brides, grooms and even the extended bridal party are now seeing this milestone as an opportunity to correct any dental imperfections by building teeth straightening procedures into their pre-wedding beauty rituals – ensuring they can smile with confidence when the wedding day arrives.

To achieve a dazzling, straight smile guaranteed to stop wedding guests in their tracks, Incognito ‘invisible’ braces, from diversified technology company 3M, are an innovative and trusted solution for orthodontics.

Unlike traditional ‘train track’ braces that are worn on the front of teeth, Incognito braces are hidden discreetly on the back of the teeth, so no one can see them.

Usually for most couples, the date for the big day is set 12 – 18 months in advance, giving them plenty of time to perfect their smile. But even if you haven’t got that much time, due to the ‘invisible’ nature of Incognito braces, you could still be wearing them on the day, yet feel completely at ease and your teeth will already have improved significantly.

The process of fitting the braces involves taking an impression of the teeth, then, using the latest computer technology, manufacturing a completely individual brace so that you achieve the perfect smile.

Cleverly, the shape of the wire, which is needed to move the teeth from start to finish, is produced using precision wire bending robots. Technicians then carefully check the results by hand and a customised solid gold brace is produced, ready to be fitted.

The brace fits comfortably behind the teeth and as it’s fixed in place, there is no need to worry about social mishaps if you are wearing it on the big day or any other day – allowing you to enjoy food and drinks, without the need to remove your brace

Whatever your age or treatment goals, Incognito braces will give you an even bigger excuse to never stop smiling, even when the highly anticipated wedding album arrives. Costs vary depending upon individual needs, but on average the brace and treatment process begins from 1500€  and takes around 6 to 18 months to complete. This will be determined on assessment.

Orthodontic treatment represents a large financial investment. In fact, some people may put off getting braces for themselves or for their children because they do not think they can afford them. We understand this and therefore offer more affordable and flexible 0% financing programs that allow payments to be spread out over the duration of your treatment.

Book an assessment here for FREE in our Donegal practice or for only €50 in our sligo practice. Take the first step to perfecting your smile!
